  • Is it really happening? OMG but how can it be possible, he was in grade 2 some time back!
  • Did we pack everything? What no, we forgot...like 10 things! Never really thought I needed a loan for my kid’s dorm supplies!
  • I am not old enough to have a college going kid. Maybe we planned him too early, or maybe I married a bit too early. No! Okay, at least I don’t look that old!
  • Why do 18 year old girls wear clothes borrowed from the kids section? Maybe I am still living in 1958!
  • Met his room-mate, a decent and clean guy. Poor chap has no idea that his room will turn into a dumping ground soon!

hugging at drop off

  • I want to hug him to death, but he wants to act cool in front of the other young people around! Mental note- no hugging in public!
  • Food will be prepared in the mess with none of these young around. I am glad, he will not burn the place down!
  • The hostel looks more like a hospital or even a prison cell. Why don’t they add some color to the walls and furniture and curtains and...never-mind, its clean enough to live in!
  • Oh no, he is stuffing his clothes in the closet without folding them properly. What a mess he has created, his room-mate is going to have a tough time!

untidy unpacking

  • I need to resist the urge to put his things the right way. But he likes me doing it. No, not here, he wants to portray a cool image, so resist!
  • Did I put all the medicines in his bag? A cough syrup, band-aids and the like. How will he manage his sick days without a mom at his disposal?
  • What if I call him and he doesn't pick up? Should I involve the police, no. At least the college and hostel authorities. Anything can go wrong with an 18 year old inside the college campus, he might need a pain killer or worse still, is starving!
  • Met the room-mate’s parents. They are as shocked as I am. The expression they had while greeting me stated in bold, “Are they really big enough to stay all by themselves?”

dorm room

  • The mattress looks dead, it needs some padding up. Rather a lot of it, maybe around 5-6 layers to be called a real mattress!
  • Who is going to do the laundry here? I hope they have that system here. Poor laundry chap is in for a tough time with this big man’s filthy clothes! What, the kids manage their work themselves, I am not leaving him here!

  • There are so many stairs here, he will be living on the top floor and no lifts! He will grow thin over the first semester itself. Mental note- stuff him with loads of food when he is back home on vacation!
  • So many nervous kids here, must be the fresh batch. Following their parents, who are equally nervous. Wait, are my kids looking like that, am I looking like a nervous mom, hope not!

bad company

  • Some of the guys look like addicts, I need to warn him against such elements. Time to repeat the lecture, “You have to say no, just firm and straight no.”!
  • I hope he doesn't fall in bad company or spend his pocket money on expensive looking things just become pals with the not so cool gang!
  • I’ll call him at least thrice a day. What time, I guess post meal is best. I’ll know where he is heading to with his mates, he needs that check, obviously!

It was a good laugh, wasn't it? But no matter how funny you think this is, somewhere at the back of your mind you know that you relate to some of these, if not all! Okay, okay, don’t tell us but you know we aren't completely wrong here, there is some truth after all!
