Readers would hate to part with their books once they step into the ever lasting phase of parenting. When the fragrant soft covers will be replaced with diapers, you will miss being a reader. Build Up The Experience
Before your first visit with your toddler, do a lot of talking. Prep him up for what he will be seeing there. Tell him that the library is full of books that he can borrow for a read and even bring back home with him. You can show him the last cover of a book he has that has the names of other books by the same author printed on it. He might be more excited then. You can even read a story to him that explains the visit of a little child to the library, he will be motivated for it.
Set Expected Behaviors
Library is a public place and it is must that you abide by the rules of the place. So brief your child about the behaviors expected from him and the ones are not acceptable. Make a checklist of it and repeat these to him before you leave, when you reach and on return for future visits. Things like maintaining silence, talking softly, opening one book at a time, not running around, etc have to be told to them.

Explore On The First Visit
The first time you take your kid to the library, you must help him explore the place. Kids are very curious and being at a new place makes them want to practically scan every inch of it. So be patient with them and take him around for a little tour. Once he gets comfortable with the surroundings, he will be able to manage it himself. From the book racks to the tables to the play area, make him acquainted with everything and help him catch the habit of reading!

Though you might have decided that the first visit would be only about exploring but make books a part of this first day. Take your child’s attention to a book case and get him to have a look at some of them. You can even go through the section yourself and select books that you feel will interest them. Just try and get some books back home for him to read and get a feel of library. Also carry a strong bag with you to take books back. When have a little child by your hand and a stack of books to carry, you better get a strong bag!
Teach Book Care
Once you borrow a book, the responsibility begins. It is very important that you teach the care of the borrowed books to your kids. Store them in a safe place separate from the other books you own. It will help you find them when the time for their return comes. Also the library books have little pockets at the back and should not be pulled off, make sure your kids know this. Also the transparent cover it has is not taken off, this will help you prevent a library fine!
