Even when the child probably won’t be sleeping in his/her nursery anytime soon after birth, but it is a wise decision to get started and done with this one crucial work before his/her birth. 1. Consider the space and other practicalities of the house
Do you have the space to keep one independent room for the baby entirely? Or would you want to go for some innovative ideas to create that space in the little you have. When this is decided, next thing to consider is the proximity of your child’s nursery to your bedroom. When all this is sorted, see if any repair in the room are needed. A mood board is created to put together all your designing ideas together at one place. So from the color palettes to the designs and textures you want to incorporate, to the kind of pictures you would want to put in your child’s room- get it all on your mood board. The mood board should reflect everything that you want to incorporate in your baby’s nursery. It will help you select the furniture, the curtains; decide upto their material and colors. 3. Visually Stimulating Decor
While making your mood board, you should put great thought to the fact that a baby’s room should be visually stimulating. A child’s vision is one of the five senses which is not fully developed at the time of birth and therefore, in order to develop this particular sense a room full of bright hues, distinct patterns would indeed be a great idea. Highly contrasting colors and bold stripes are some of the best elements to incorporate.
4. Go For Gender Neutral Style
In India, where sex determination is illegal (for reasons good enough), taking up the task of designing and decorating your child’s nursery before the birth can sometimes make parents feeling dizzy. However, if you see it positively, not knowing your child’s gender is a good to have an unbiased approach towards the whole experience. Gender neutral nurseries have their own advantages. First, that you don’t trap your child into the stereotypical gender constructs right from birth. Second, you may use the same nursery when planning another baby. Third, ‘the pink for girl and blue for boy is such a cliche.
5. Measure up and select your main pieces
It is very important for you to draw a floorplan, envisioning how the furniture will be placed. It will help you make the best use of the space you’ve got. Key elements that must be included is the baby’s bed/cradle, the changing station which has storage space for diapers etc., a space where all his/her toys will be stocked up,the almirah/clothes rack, feeding chair and maybe a sitting space where a couple of other people could sit. Measure the room and allocate spaces for each of the furniture items accordingly.

6. The nursery should Reflect Your True Style
An interior decorator’s words should not be the last words. For that matter, you don’t even need one at the first place.
