Your Kid Chopped Off Her Hair- What To Do?

If your kid has ‘creative’ mind that opens doors to a mud layered house floor, glue spilled furniture or a fish tank full of soap, you totally need to read this! Why? Your child has all the creativity in the world to think that she needs to chop off her hair, HERSELF! Imagine a scene, one day at breakfast you notice her hair are flowing loose and not tied in a ponytail as she does everyday for school. You try to push her hair back of the ear and notice she has bangs. Well not a properly styled ones, bangs going haywire to the side of her head! Did a shriek escape your gaping mouth? Well that’s exactly you are not supposed to do in such a situation. We are not trying to scare you but this might happen and you need to be prepared to handle it. So here’s how you need to act, the do’s and don’ts are laid out clearly for you to keep off from making parenting blunders, check them out!

Don’t go in a state of shock, she is creative, we warmed you this was coming! Jokes apart, a shocked state of mind elicits responses that you won’t be proud of later. Keep yourself from hauling insults at her repeatedly or falling to the floor, cribbing!

Do ask her why she did this but calmly. Instead of a shocked expression, she needs to see a sane woman. Be very polite while you demand an explanation and actually attempt to listen to what comes out of her tiny mouth!

Don’t take silly decisions impulsively out of shock! “Never again you are allowed near a scissor in your life” or “I am going to put away the scissors out of your reach” will not help. You might forget where you kept them, so bad idea!

Do behave like a grown up who is full of practical advice. Act like a mature adult and explain it to her why it is better to leave the hair chopping to the experts. Also try to put forth alternatives to channelize her ever increasing energy!

Don’t think about the upcoming events, functions, get together's that call for picture moments. You might have made the arrangements, paid for it and won’t be able to cancel it. But don’t mention all that, put all that at the back of your mind!

Do consider consulting your spouse on this situation. Text or call him to explain the disaster and wait for his views on crisis management. The first thing that he will probably say is, “Breathe” so obey him, it’ll help!

Don’t try to dig out the lost curls from the garbage can and cry over the loss. It will only aggravate your desire to consider your options on hair extensions, which again is no no!

Do tell yourself that it will pass, this phase will go. Chime, “Its OK, its just her hair that will grow in a few months” on repeat in your heart. It won’t put things back to normal but will certainly shed light on the temporary nature of the situation!

We are not saying that your kid will end up with a messy mop for her hair when her creativity strikes. But being mentally prepared for such a situation doesn't hurt either!
