Understanding Baby Cries : Decoding the Secret Language

Babies cry like birds fly.” It’s a part of their being. For the parents to pacify their little one becomes the biggest project of their lives. There is no way you can avoid the wailing and whining, but learning to understand this secret language of your kid could help you two communicate better.

First and foremost, listen to your baby’s cry real carefully. Does it sound just the same every single time, or is there a certain pattern to it? Loud hollering at times and whimpering at other? Sometimes is there no stopping the siren but on certain occasions it  stops in a brink? If you could make out the minute differences, you are moving in the right direction.

The best way out would be to observe for a couple of days and note the particular sounds your baby makes to get his specific demands met. Glancing over the list below might help you in the process.

Here are some general patterns of baby cries you should look out for:

Type 1

hungry_babyThe most common of all. You’ll hear them throughout the day. The cries are rhythming and repititive. No screaming, nor too intense. He’d probably be sucking on his thumb by now.

Decoded as - “I am hungry.”

Feed your poor darling who is craving for a breast suck or bottle milk.

Type 2

Crying-Baby-Images_7

Sudden inexplicable crying. Better put yelling. There is a fierce expression on the baby’s face until you pay some attention, and then it turns into a timid one.

Decoded as - “Hold me in your arms.”

All Babies ploy for attention; so does yours. Just take your infant in your arms and cuddle him. You’ll see the instant giggling coming.

Type 3

slow build-up of crying over several minutes. The sounds are low accompanied with yawns.

Decoded as - “Enough of the fun and play. I am tired.”

Plain and simple - Put him to sleep.

Type 4

Grunting sounds with with a scrunched-up expression. This could be for two reasons -

  1. Accompanied with actual crying

Decoded as -“Make me burp please.”

The baby is uncomfortable. It is highly possible that gas/indigestion is the reason. Rub your baby’s tummy that would help him burp and feel relieved.

  1. The same expression is accompanied with the widening of eyes but no crying

Decoded as - “Potty time. I’ll take of it all. Just get me cleaned up soon.”

Type 5

A crying baby

Loud powerful howling
For a prolonged time. The cries just get more and more high-pitched and the baby totally inconsolable.

Decoded as - “I am not a cry baby. You too would have tears rolling down in such pain.”

It is time for medical aid. You probably should call a doctor.
