Setting up a Routine For Your Twins

Arrival of twin babies is double the happiness as well as double the trouble. Managing two newborns at the same time is no easy task for any parent. It requires a lot of patience, organization and skill to carry out this responsibility. The smart thing to in this case is establishing a routine for you as well as your twins, so that you save yourself from the ever changing drills.

But how can you do that? With those two tiny little beings, who may not always act alike; while one may wish to sleep, the other may want feed. Is it even possible that they are so well co-ordinated that it actually feels like taking care of one soul in two bodies? Ummm...No, maybe not! But still almost similar routines may well be set for the two, and chances are very bright that they mould into it comfortably.

For starters, try following the nurse at the hospital. With twins 2-3 days at the hospital is typical and during this time, the nurses will put up a set routine for your little ones. So you may well keep that going even after going back home. Take notes from the nurses tending to your babies.

Feed Together

To have the newborns take up a similar schedule, feeding them together comes as the primal step. You can do so by learning how to handle two of them together while breastfeeding. There are varied ways of positioning the twins so as to nurse them both at the same time. You may require some help to learn it from the nurses and later a bit of support from your partner. Breastfeeding the twins together can help you save time for yourself, but will only work for a few weeks, as their hunger will grow.

Then comes the weaning time, and you’ll have your kids shifting to solid foods. When used to breastfeeding at the same time, your twins will automatically take to eating their meals at the same time too. It has been observed that feeding the infants from their separate bowls is only inviting mess and confusion. So no need to do that. One bowl, one spoon is good for both.

Putting the twins to sleep together

Sleeping-Twins

A warm bath, a calm cozy bed, little snuggling can induce sleep in most babies. So set the tone for sleep. However, it may not have the exact impact on both the kids. So the trick is to attend to the one more silent and more inclined to sleep than the active one. You may have thought of the opposite way to work. However, this is the correct way of doing it. While putting the calmer one off to sleep will then help you focus all the attention on the other, if you think your sleeping baby might wake up by his sibling’s noise, don’t worry. Twins are so used to each other they hardly get bothered by their crying and wailing.

If one wakes up in the middle of their nap time, it would be a good idea to wake the other from his slumber as well. Now, you may find it harsh on the latter one, but it will go a long way to bind them together in a set schedule.

And then, as they grow up, putting them to sleep at the same time may still be a good idea but together, definitely not. Make them sleep separately, else the little monsters will end up spending the whole time talking and giggling together.

These are the two most crucial aspects that need to be set right to manage and put twins to a set routine to give the mother some free time to herself. Rest will fall right automatically. So pay heed and enjoy bringing up the double blessing you are bestowed with.
