When you start introducing solid foods to your little one, be cautious of not rushing it. It is important for you to understand that the baby will take his own sweet time to adjust to this new change. Being so used to the milk feed they’ve had so far, developing a taste to food items that all look, and each of it leaving an alien sensation on their taste buds; it is quite likely they will make a fuss to chew them and get them down their little throats. However, that is not the only reason to keep it slow. Food allergies is another reason, and definitely a big one.

Kids may be susceptible to certain kind of foods, and if you do not try one food at a time, it will hard to find out what caused the allergy, if any does arise. So being aware of such possibilities will help you recognize and identify the symptoms as well as the causes early on, and thus take precautions in future.   • Cow Milk
  • Egg
  • Peanuts
  • Tree nuts

- Pediatricians advise to wait until the baby is good 9-10 months old before you try these common allergy causing food, especially peanuts, for the reactions are severe(if they be). So, it is better not to let children under 3 years of age have this particular nut.

- Allergic reactions may occur to different individuals by different foods. Also, it is not unusual that a food which is not usually known for causing allergies otherwise, may cause one to your child in particular. For example, my friend’s baby is allergic to ginger.

- Food allergies don’t take much time to appear once after the consumption of the allergic culprit. The symptoms to look out for are-

  • Sudden rashes (most often they appear on face, stomach, neck or arms).
  • Swelling on face, lips or tongue
  • Coughing
  • Fatigue and loss of consciousness
  • Problem breathing
  • Vomiting or diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Eczema (most often due to milk allergy)

- In case of mild allergies, they die out soon and there is not much to worry about. You don’t even have to take external medications to subdue the effect. However, in case of severe ones, rush to the doctor immediately.

- Try and feed your child one kind of a food at a time, so that in case some allergy crops up you can immediately point down the food item that caused it.

- To make sure your assumption is correct, you may have to take the child to the pediatrician and get a skin prick test to make the diagnosis

- Discarding the allergen food from your child’s diet altogether is not the right approach.

- Consult your doctor to whether or not it will be safe to test the food again after some time.

-  There is not a definite cure of food allergies, however, breastfeeding for the first 3-4 months is said to reduce the risk of developing such allergies in infants.
