Russia saw its first mass level protest by women on 1917, 23 February. The strike by women was for “bread and peace”. Russia did not adopt the Gregorian calendar till after the revolution and thus 23 February corresponded to 8 march.
1975 was observed as the International Women’s Year and the UN selected 8 March as International Women’s Day.
