Tricks To Getting Your Child To Sleep On Her Own

A child has a natural tendency of falling asleep in her mother’s lap most peacefully. If not the lap then either of the parent’s presence is required for her to feel safe and sleep without any fear. So then, is it not possible to make the child sleep on his own?

Of course, it is Possible. Falling asleep is a habit that all kids learn sooner or later by themselves. It may require the parents to create a favorable environment though, but eventually as the habit is developed the baby will no longer cry for an adult’s presence to get to bed and doze off.

The next question in line is- how to create that environment? Here are the requisite steps:

Begin the preparations early in the Evening

Physical activity is needed but not all day long. Make sure the child rests his heels two-three hours before the bedtime. Stop them from racing around the house, because its difficult to switching from a hyper-active mode to sleep mode instantly. So gradually setting the mood is important.

Follow a routine every night

Before sending off your baby to sleep, set a routine that signals sleep time. Like after dinner giving them a warm bath and then putting them in their cute pajamas and heading to the bed for stories. You may also teach them some bedtime prayer and finally letting them enter the world of dream. When the child will start to follow the pattern everyday, it will subconsciously register in mind that it is time to sleep and they will automatically doze off at the end.

Set the Biological Clock

Along with following a routine, setting a fixed time to follow it is crucially important. When same things are done on same time each day, a biological clock sets in. The body urges to sleep at a time when it is usually accustomed to. For young kids an early bedtime is recommended, So you should have them finish all their chores, and put them on bed between 7-8 p.m.

Set up the Bed Properly

Ensure that once the child hits the bed she gets all cozy and comfortable in there. A child has a normal tendency of slightly waking up at the middle of the night, and it is not very difficult for them to fall into deep slumber again but for any disturbance or discomfort. So make sure the bed is made properly. There is comfy bedding and snug blanket. There are one or two of her favorite stuff toys there, so as the child doesn’t feel alone. Keep the lights dim, a pitch dark room can be frightening.

Let them soothe themselves

This is the best way to teach them to sleep on their own. If you make the child understand that no one’s going to come and make them fall asleep they will sleep themselves. It is like if you never let the baby down, and carry her in your arms all the time when will she learn to crawl. Same goes for developing sleeping habits too. Don’t just keep to the bedside, patting their head or rocking the crib (if they still haven’t switched to a bed yet). When the kid sees no one is coming, they will eventually put themselves to sleep on their own.

However, do keep a check on them every now and then, just to reassure that the baby is fine.
