Know your Newborn Babies

How amazing is that feeling when you hold your newborn for the first time in your arms. The tender skin, the closed eyes, the lightweight, the soft skin, the pinkish red color, the peeling off of skin etc, everything seems so amusing, so beautiful. We do not think there is a superior feeling to this. This we guess is the best feeling a man and a woman can have. Well, many congratulations to the new parents. The nine months were nothing, the real challenge will start now. This is the time you’ll have to give up on some favorite habits of yours to adopt some not so likable ones. You’ll have to be there 24*7 for your newborn. Let’s read further to know your newborn more.

The first time you see your newborn

The first time you see your little one right after the delivery you won’t find him the way you imagined him to be. His eyes will be shrunk, his head puffed, his color reddish pink. Well, not his fault anyone will look the same way after spending 9 months in a womb. He’ll look like you imagined, give him some time.

Do not expect them to be responsive

Well, yes! We know you are eagerly waiting to play with your neonate. We know you expect him to respond to your jokes and actions but wait, let him breathe. He has just come out of a liquid zone to an air one. Let him adjust and after 6 months he’ll start responding to you. He’ll smile at you, he’ll coo. But this doesn’t mean he isn’t attached to you or he doesn’t feel or recognize your touch, he does and he loves to be held.

Wait for the umbilical cord to fall off to give a proper bath

The umbilical cord is the thing through which the baby was connected to his mom in the womb. This cord is cut during the delivery of the baby. Thus, separating the baby from the mother’s body to establish another connection between them. So, it is advised not to give the baby a proper water bath before that remain of the umbilical cord sheds off as if wet daily it will take time to shed. So meantime you can give the baby a warm sponge bath to clean him up. Also when this cord sheds, a slight trace of blood will be seen, do not fret. It is normal.

Soft spot needs handling

The soft spot present in the baby’s head needs a little extra care but that is not something you should be scared to hold your baby off. You can hold your baby or can comb the hair present near or above it, just keep it gentle. The soft spot is an opening in the skull also known as frontal. The spot may pulsate as it is directly over the blood vessels but there’s nothing to be scared of, just a little extra care, just that!

Is he getting enough food? He’ll let you know

They cannot speak or act but yes they give signs to tell what they need, it is just that we need to be observant to know what they need and when. Well, ye parenting isn’t an easy job! So, to know if he is getting enough food you can check his weight. A newborn loses 5 to 8 percent of the birth weight within the first week and gains it back by the second and this tells about his feeding. You can also check if he’s getting enough food by keeping a track of his diapers. His urine cycle and poop will let you know if his feedings are proper.

Dry skin is normal, they will shed some too

Do not fret if you observe his skin getting dry. This is completely normal. Your baby was in a liquid zone of your womb for 9 months and now he has come out in the air. The change in environment for sure will affect his skin and will make it dry. All you can do is get some baby moisturizer for him. Keep in mind, some baby lotion which is fragrance-free.

Do not lock yourself up!

There’s no need to be home with your baby all the time. Yes initial days are meant to be locked but then after few weeks you can come out, just need some smart acts. Acts like, avoid crowds, avoid taking him in sun, avoid visiting people who are sick, avoid going to a mall on a holiday. To keep your baby away from infection, teach the older siblings to touch baby’s feet instead of hands. You can also ask them to guide and ask them to tell people to wash their hands off before touching the baby. And yeah! No month birthday parties.

You’ll find them crying a lot

Yea! This can irritate you. They will cry a lot. Babies cry and this is how they communicate. If the diaper is causing them irritation, they will cry to let know asking to get them off the diaper. If they are hungry, they’ll cry asking for food. So get his signal, learn the types of cry, learn which cry indicates what.

Guess now the picture is clear. Now you know you're newborn more than you knew him before. Well, this little information will help you connect better with him and also will help to be a good mommy and daddy. Have a good time learning parents!
