That Special Women’s Day Card...

daughter

A little bundle of joy, came into our lives 6 years back. For us, who already were blessed with a 2 year old son at that time, her birth had completed the family. We wanted to share the happiness of her arrival with all, and so distributed sweets among friends, relatives and neighbors. But the wonderment by which some of them reluctantly received the sweets surprised as well as disappointed us. They did not have to say it, but we know that the idea of celebrating the birth of a girl did not go well down their throat.

Anyway, I wasn’t ever a social activist who would wish to give them a piece of my mind. So, we just ignored those frowns and raising of the brows; and only acknowledged the heartfelt congratulations from where it came. It was a long forgotten tale, which today I suddenly got reminded of. What triggered the reminiscence was a Women’s Day card which I chanced upon in my children’s bedroom today. I thought like everything else they do together, this two was the creation of the inseparable brother-sister duo. But just a quick glance was enough to know, there was no contribution in it from my little princess.

Women's Day

My son draws beautifully, and he had drawn a caricature of a mother with his two children, holding her hand on either side. At the top of the boy, he made a Star head band, and on the girl’s head had put up a tiara with a ‘Halo’ like that of an Angel. He had done the borders very creatively, by pasting my ‘bindis’ on all sides. I was overwhelmed, but what was written inside of this lovely card is what left me teary eyed-

"To my fairy god mother and my angel sister.
Happy Woman Day Mummy and Ullu."

Oh yes, this beautiful gesture of my son towards his sister, has today made me feel so proud as a mother. My boy recognizes the role of women around her so well, and I am sure he will in future turn to be a man who respects and treats them well.

While my son is all set to show his gratitude towards the two most important women in his life right now - his mother and sister; I can’t help but imagine him showing the same sweet gesture towards his future wife, and well obviously to his daughter (if he has one).
