Age wise sleep patterns for babies

0 to 3 months old
You can expect your newborn to be asleep for about 18 hours on course of 24 hour, not more than 2 to 3 hours of sleep at a time.

3 to 6 months old
Now your baby may sleep for 15 hours, he can sleep for 10 hours at a stretch during night time with three naps during the day.

6 to 9 months old
Your baby needs about 13 hours of sleep a day. He can sleep 7 to 10 hours at a stretch. The morning and the afternoon nap become more consistent in duration, lasting for 1.5 hours each.

9 to 12 months old
Between 9 to 12 months your baby may sleep about 12 hours and the entire sleep is during night time with few naps during day.

12 to 18 months old
Now your baby is officially a toddler. He still needs about 12 hours of sleep a day. The entire sleep is during night time with very short naps during day time.

18 to 24 months old
Your baby needs about 10 to 12 hours of sleep, the entire sleep is during night time, he might take a two hour day sleep.the sleep pattern stabilizes between 9 to 24 months of age. At this stage your honey bunny will tend to fall into consistent sleep patterns, walking up briefly during night to fall asleep almost immediately.

For your little ones to have a good sleep pattern we have jotted down some tips for you:

  • When your baby is in the age of 0 to 3 months, you will have to make a distinction between his day and night activities. Play, chat and sing with him during day time and at night let him sleep quietly, even when you are feeding him.
  • When your baby turns 3 months old he will transition to sleeping in her own cot. Give him a warm baby bubbly bath before bet time, massage him gently, sing lullaby.
  • When your baby turns 6 months he will start developing separation anxiety. Other milestone like teething, learning to sit/crawl might make your little one averse to sleep. Hence, continue with the bedtime routine which you started at 3 months of age and stick to it.
  • And when your baby turns 18 months he will be walking with confident strides. This is the age to teach your little one to settle down, by cuddling with soft toy or blanket. Let your child not depend on external conditions like music or bottle of milk to go to sleep. Nothing is more blissful than watching your toddler sleeping peacefully. However, establishing a schedule and adding a little bit of discipline to it, would ensure that as a parent you also wouldn't miss out on those hours of sleep.
