All kids do that

It is really a difficult job to deal with the children suffering from autism and we all know this very well, even the parents know this. Since we all know the fact, you should not say this in front of the parent. Autistic child struggle with school, have mood swings and get disturbed only with the change of their plate. Say for example if you change the plate he used to take lunch in, he might get violent, might not talk or refuse to take meal. The possibility is that he might cry all day due to this.

Now, if the autism parent is telling you all this, you should not tell them that every child does so. Listening to this they might think that you are brushing aside their struggles. So, instead listen to them and tell them that though you do not understand much what they are going through but they have you to talk whenever they need. This will make them feel good and they’ll be happy to know that they have someone to talk to.

Have you tried gluten free/essential oils/ABA therapy etc.

Yeah, you might know few things and therapies and treatments to cure autism but don’t you think that the parents know them all too, more than you may be. There are some parents who might have already considered some treatments as good or bad or there might be some who are vehemently against any cure. So, it is better not to advice them with treatments or therapies instead you can ask them what they are doing? And what they think is working and all? You can ask them about their support network or you can ask them what and how you can contribute and help.

I am sorry

You should never say this phrase to an autism parent. Yes, you might not have anything to say or you might not know what to say but we advise not to use this phrase to fill the gap. You can say anything but not this. Using this sorry you’ll be feeling sorry for the life of the child and that is something not good as for the autism parent their child is everything, the world to them. Instead you can say or ask them about autism and can ask them about their child and his strength and weaknesses.

Where do you think he/she get this from

It is very likely that autism in a child is the result of both genetic combination and environmental factors. So, it is of no use asking a parent where did the child get this from. They might feel bad about it and yeah one should never refer autism as ‘it’. Referring autism as ‘it’ might sound like a disease and can turn an autism parent’s struggle harder. Instead ask general questions about the journey and also discuss his capabilities and that how good is life with him.

Being a parent is itself not an easy task and if you have beautiful child with some minor problems it gets even more harder. It is no doubt that parenting demands patience and with a special child it gets more challenging but we as a human being should take an initiative to make this world a better place for both an autistic child and the autism parent. Now you know how!
