Women cannot survive in big companies for long, they often quit or at the very least stay stuck at the same position for years. Heard this before, haven't you? In your young days you might have laughed at this but chances are that once you become a mother you’ll begin to agree with it. Its not because you are not capable enough but because you will have to face prejudices at your workplace. Being a part of the Indian society where women are thought to be homemakers only, you can well imagine your plight as a working mom! Availing the rights and privileges of being a nursing mother is not so easy and if you are lucky enough to get these, be ready to face jealous remarks from the colleagues. Below are the comments you will be facing once you break the news of your pregnancy at the office!

Nobody comes back after having a baby

People at most companies feel that once you go off to your maternity leave, you are less likely to turn up once its over. This thinking at the workplace is a major cause of stress among women. Your colleagues might welcome you with a cold stare and drop their support thinking that you will not be returning. That’s sad!

You get the privilege of working from home

We all fantasize the idea of working from home but don’t go practical about it because its done only in case of absolute necessity. Being a pregnant mom, one can find it tough to travel everyday keeping in mind the morning sickness. Also in complicated pregnancies, some women are advised complete bed rest. So what do you expect these women to do? Availing the work from home facility is the last option which brings images of lazing around the house in the minds of the colleagues!

You are not a team player

You are not a team player

That’s a tough one to deal with! Just because you decided to have a baby, your boss starts thinking that you are a liability to the company. It is likely that you will receive, “You are not a team player and have set a wrong example for the rest.” from your boss on breaking the pregnancy news to him. Worse still, he might just ask you to write a resign, serve the notice period and be lost!

You didn't think this was coming? Though your boss and the colleagues reassure you that they will cooperate with your flexible timings, they soon grow tired of it. Your coming in late, going home early or taking frequent leaves will trouble them. And before you know it, they will have a younger person replace you because after all he is more regular (and not pregnant)!

These prejudices have been in the work culture of many countries. Though some companies are making conscious efforts to make it easier for their female employees, many find it easier to just fire them. We hope these prejudices don’t stay for long and new moms are accommodated with open minds!
